The incredible rise in awareness and adoption of generative AI technology has seen platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT reach more than 100 million users. But within the education sphere the AI boom has sparked mixed responses.

Some high school and elementary schools in the US have taken steps to stop students from using ChatGPT due to fears over cheating. Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland, for example, has blocked access to the site on student devices and browsers.

Also in the US, a philosophy professor at Furman University reported catching a student turning in an AI-generated essay, while one of France's top universities, Sciences Po, also banned the use of ChatGPT and other AI tools.

However, many of the world’s business schools are embracing the technology, incorporating AI-teaching into the curriculum and hosting workshops providing students with experience using generative AI tools.

For graduate students coming to the end of their business school journey, generative AI can even be a helpful tool when crafting a resume to send out to potential employers. ChatGPT can help you quickly create and optimize your resume and cover letters.

Here are five ways you can use ChatGPT for your job hunt.

1. Customize your cover letter

It is vital to tailor your resume and cover letter for every job you apply to, making sure you

are including as many keywords from the job description as possible. However, that can take a lot of time plus fine tooth-combing.

But ChatGPT can help. Ask ChatGPT to “write a cover letter for a business analyst job”, for example, and you'll get back a surprisingly useful and well-structured letter, to which you can add relevant personal details and experience.

2. Personalize your resume

Creating a new resume for every job you apply to is easily one of the most time-consuming parts of job hunting, however you can use ChatGPT to personalize your resume for you.

Have your current resume at hand, and in the prompt box, ask ChatGPT to “personalize my resume for this (job title) role at (company name)”. Also paste in the job ad, plus your existing resume. This will lead it to output a specific resume for the role, saving you a wealth of time in the process.

3. Generate keywords

If you prefer to write your own resume, AI can still provide useful assistance to streamline the process. You can simply use ChatGPT to identify the right keywords to add.

Do this by pasting the job description into the chatbot and asking it to tell you the three to five most important responsibilities for the role. This delivers actionable keywords to include in your resume.

4. Explain complex terms

The chatbot has other job hunting-related uses, too. If unfamiliar terms have cropped up in a job description or during the requirements section of an application, ChatGPT can help. Whenever this happens, ask it to explain a topic or technical jargon, and it will return a succinct, plain English explanation that can help you out.

5. Interview questions

ChatGPT can help in two ways when it comes to interviews. You can ask it to tell you the most common interview questions for a specific job title or job area or ask it to generate questions to ask at the end of the process.

You could request the most common questions to ask at an interview, for example, or ask for suggestions based on the job description, which you can paste in to give context.
