When contemplating an MBA journey in India, there are many options available to you. Although the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) often take the spotlight, numerous private institutions offer exceptional education and career prospects.

One such eminent institution is the Management Development Institute (MDI) in Gurgaon.

Established in 1973, MDI holds the 13th position in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) Management Ranking 2023. It is the second-highest-ranked private business school on the list, after XLRI Jamshedpur.

Here’s why you should consider MDI Gurgaon for your MBA, and how to make a stellar application.

Why study at MDI Gurgaon?

One of the biggest reasons to pursue business education is to launch a successful career. Students at MDI Gurgaon receive ample support to do this, including gaining access to top employers.

According to the MDI Gurgaon Placement Report, 102 recruiters participated in the school’s 2023 placement drive. It reported that 472 students got offers and 154 students received pre-placement offers. The highest salary was INR 60 lakh (around US $72,000).

MDI's talent pool consistently attracts recruiters from diverse industries, offering coveted roles across a wide spectrum, including consulting, finance, e-commerce, consumer goods, and healthcare.

Is MDI Gurgaon good for an MBA?

The most popular program at MDI Gurgaon is the school’s Post Graduate Diploma In Management (PGDM).

This two-year, full-time program is sanctioned by the All India Council for Technical Education and acknowledged by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). This means it is on par with an MBA degree from an Indian University.

In addition to the main PDGM program, the school also offers PGDM programs with specializations in HR management, international business, and business analytics.

Who is eligible for MDI Gurgaon?

Admission to any of the PGDM programs at MDI Gurgaon and to the PGDM program at MDI Murshidabad requires candidates to successfully complete the Common Admission Test (CAT).

This is a three-hour, computer-based test split into three sections:

  1. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
  2. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
  3. Quantitative Ability

You must also have scored at least 50% in Class X and XII and have a bachelor’s degree of at least three years for the standard, HR management, and business analytics programs. This rises to a four-year bachelor’s degree for the international business program.

Here’s what she had to say.

What do you look for in MBA applicants?

At MDI Gurgaon, we seek dynamic professionals with at least three years of work experience, showcasing leadership potential and a passion for learning.

We value diverse backgrounds as they enrich the collaborative learning experience within our executive graduate programs for working executives.

Successful applicants demonstrate a track record of achievement, adaptability, and a clear vision for their future in business.

What CAT and GMAT scores should candidates aim for?

An individual with a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)™ score of 600 and a CAT score at the 80th percentile might consider targeting an Executive Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM-Business Management and Business Administration).

The cutoff is decided by the admissions committee every year. Approximately, a GMAT score of 600 and a score in the 80th percentile on the CAT may be considered for shortlisting for a personal interview. [Note that the GMAT scores will change with the move to GMAT Focus.]

What MBA application advice would you give?

My top advice revolves around emphasizing the personal interview aspect. This pivotal stage often sheds light on your personality beyond what's on paper.

Prepare by staying updated on current affairs; it showcases your awareness and adaptability. Additionally, leverage your academic background by highlighting achievements or unique aspects that distinguish you.

These elements can significantly boost your overall application and make a lasting impression on the admission committee.

How should candidates approach the academic writing test?

Approaching the academic writing component for an Executive PGDM, which doesn't entail a written test but requires a Statement of Purpose (SOP), demands a specific strategy.

Your SOP should showcase your intentions, motivations, and a clear roadmap for your academic and professional journey.

Focus on precision, ensuring each word contributes meaningfully to portray your unique perspective and envisioned approach towards the program and its impact on your career trajectory.

What should I expect in the MDI Gurgaon interview?

Our interviews delve into a candidate's professional journey, assessing their problem-solving abilities, leadership skills, and strategic thinking. We focus on real-world scenarios, ensuring candidates can apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges.

We value authenticity and seek individuals who clearly articulate their experiences and goals. The interview allows candidates to showcase their unique perspectives and how they can contribute to and benefit from our executive graduate programs.

Can I get into MDI Gurgaon with an average academic record?

We strongly believe in the potential for growth and success beyond academic transcripts. While academic performance is considered necessary, it's not the sole determinant.

We assess candidates holistically, emphasizing professional achievements, leadership qualities, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Many of our successful alumni with average academic records have excelled in the program, proving that dedication, practical experience, and a strong work ethic are key indicators of success in our executive graduate programs for working executives.
