Dear Sirs,
1. A good cover letter starts with a brief intro and what you can offer.
I am writing to apply for the position of Director of International Air Freight at Fedex. I have been a freelance air freight manager since 1583 AD. As such I have significant experience of the market and have built an extensive network of senior contacts within the industry.
2. Add more detail re: what makes you suitable for the role.
As a freelance manager, I have fulfilled a number of roles often delegated to junior managers in more traditional freight companies. This has included but is not limited to reindeer management, elf supply chain logistics and managing the present complaints department. Furthermore, since going public, I have grown our customer base from around 200 million to at present, in excess of 7 billion.
3. Mention hard skills/extra relevant details. Give a few examples. Try and stand out from the crowd.
Over the last 430 years, I have become fluent in multiple languages and have gained an advanced knowledge of multiple software packages, including SAP and MySQL. I have significant client facing experience and have managed a large team of elves, often requiring on the spot dispute management. In looking to modernise the firm's strategy and marketing department, I spent two years at London Business School (Class of 96) and spent a very interesting summer interning at the Royal Mail.
4. Why do you want the job?
The role at Fedex appeals to me as I feel it is time to move on from my current position. I have recently successfully managed to delegate many of my responsibilities to a number of the company’s Vice Presidents. Frankly I am getting slightly fed up with the local weather and I am keen to take this rare opportunity to move to North West London. Fedex is widely regarded as the premier air freight logistics manager in the Northern hemisphere and I feel that there is much I could offer your company given the regional overlap between our respective operations.
I have attached my CV for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,
F. Christmas MBA, CFA, ACA, PhD.
