Tell us a about yourself.
I am originally from Brunei and received most of my education and medical training in the UK and Singapore.
I currently work as a consultant in medical oncology in a government hospital in the Ministry of Health, in Brunei.
It is true that treating patients with life-limiting diseases can be a challenge. But what drives my career interest is the satisfaction of being able to communicate with such patients and make a sound decision on their treatment goals.
Why did you choose Birmingham’s Online MBA in Clinical Leadership?
As the pandemic amplified, clinicians were expected to grasp the importance of healthcare management and enter several leadership roles.
The issue is that in medical training, we are not trained for the managerial aspect of healthcare.
I chose to do the online MBA at Birmingham as it is one of the most prestigious universities and the first to offer an ‘integrated’ MBA with clinical leadership in the UK.
How have you benefitted from the Online MBA in Clinical Leadership?
It was daunting at first as I had no managerial skills. After I enrolled, however, the tutors were understanding and provided me with support and reassurance.
Despite the course being online, tutors and student have vibrant and engaging discussions during and outside the online classrooms.
I was also extremely surprised when I took my first module in Operations Management, that I could apply the key concepts to healthcare management.
What advice do you have for anyone considering an online MBA?
It was quite challenging at first to find the right balance between work, study, and family.
It is important that you don’t feel intimidated, you may struggle in the program because of your unfamiliarity with business jargon. Most of my colleagues and myself found ourselves in the same boat. The tutors were very supportive.

When I went to see the University of Birmingham, instantly, I was set on coming to this uni. The compass is absolutely beautiful with a range of different study spaces and outdoor spaces which is great for studying in the summer or spending time with your friends. The university offers a range of different societies which makes everyone feel very included. You get a lot of support from most lecturers, which is great as I know not a lot of uni support students with their studies however here at Birmingham they’re always happy to help.

I love studying Pharmacy at Birmingham and would absolutely recommend it, especially because of the variety in every aspect of the course. Firstly, the variety of people you meet from all areas around the country, and even countless others from outside the country. Each person has a different background and experiences creating a melting pot of personalities to interact with. Next, the lessons - there are numerous types of lessons we encounter on a weekly basis from lectures to dissections to a computer workshops. Additionally, specific to medical degrees, I have 7 placements annually in hospital, community, and GP pharmacies. The only lack of variety in the pharmacy course is the classrooms since there are limited number we can use and the medical school is separate from the main campus. The only part I don't enjoy about pharmacy is the distances and unreliability of public transport in Birmingham. Living in the vale, the university is a long 25-minute walk away and my closest shop is over 10-20 minutes to walk. Although there are closer accommodations, I really love my flat with its modern decor, large room, and social aspect of the shared kitchen.

The only lack of variety in the pharmacy course is the classrooms since there are limited number we can use and the medical school is separate from the main campus. The only part I don't enjoy about pharmacy is the distances and unreliability of public transport in Birmingham. Living in the vale, the university is a long 25-minute walk away and my closest shop is over 10-20 minutes to walk. Although there are closer accommodations, I really love my flat with its modern decor, large room, and social aspect of the shared kitchen.

University of Birmingham has been an outstanding university. They have provided complete support during COVID-19. The university is incredible when accessing support with mental health. I currently study criminology at the university of Birmingham. The course has been brilliant, with constant support from lectures and tutors to ensure that you achieve the best grade possible. I could not recommend University of Birmingham more!

There were so many people who wanted to enroll in the course that they had to queue for a new course for six months in advance. International Relations and Development
My experience at the University of Birmingham has been exceptional. The University has given me a wide range of opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities, which benefit me in my well-being and in my studies. The University is fantastic in ensuring that you get the education you want, as long as its not too farfetched. By example, I requested to switch courses in the summer between first and second year, and my request was dealt with smoothly in a matter of weeks. The campus is a very easy one to navigate, and in itself is a very nice one, quite modern.

When I went to see the University of Birmingham, instantly, I was set on coming to this uni. The compass is absolutely beautiful with a range of different study spaces and outdoor spaces which is great for studying in the summer or spending time with your friends. The university offers a range of different societies which makes everyone feel very included. You get a lot of support from most lecturers, which is great as I know not a lot of uni support students with their studies however here at Birmingham they’re always happy to help.
