The Sunday Times is one of the most influential newspapers in the world and on September 11th they announced their 2011/12 university rankings. Bath was named the ‘University of the Year’ in recognition of its all-round excellence, encompassing a range of aspects of research, teaching, employability and the student experience.

With a readership of three million, the Sunday Times’ University Guide provides both a British university league table as well as writing profiles on each of the UK’s higher education institutions.

The Editor of the Sunday Times University Guide, Alastair McCall, said “The country depends on the success of universities like Bath, not just because of its innovative, relevant research, but also because of the intelligent, passionate and work-ready graduates it turns out each year. They will be the leaders and innovators of tomorrow and they are ultimately the university’s best advertisement.”

In the league table the University of Bath has ascended to 5th out of 122 UK universities and colleges; its highest ever placing.

Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, said: “This is a prestigious honour and a fantastic achievement for Bath. It reflects the enthusiasm and commitment of the entire University community, both our staff and students, and is something we can all take great pride in.”

Professor Breakwell went on to say: “We attract real academic high-flyers to the University, with nearly 75 per cent of our entrants coming with grades of at least AAB or equivalent, reinforcing our position in the top rank of UK universities.”
Alastair McCall said that Bath was a thoroughly deserving winner of the accolade and that “ranking fifth in our university league table is no mean feat and is confirmation of the teaching and research excellence that takes place there.”

The Sunday Times University Guide’s league table is compiled using a number of criteria including student satisfaction, research quality, academic peer review, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, dropout rates and graduate employment levels.

And with the double weighting of measures of graduate employability this year, Bath could play to their strengths. Professor Breakwell added: “We run one of the largest and most established undergraduate business placement schemes in UK higher education with around two thirds of our students spending a year on an industrial or business placement. It gives our students a valuable insight into working life in a business and means they are highly valued and sought after by leading graduate employers.”
