Want to accelerate your career after business school? Good news: The Bureau of Labor Statistics has confirmed that jobs within the business and finance industries are expected to climb more than any other sector over the next few years.

In fact, opportunities are projected to rise by more than 900,000 year-over-year until 2032. That means there’s more opportunity than ever before to cultivate a career post-business school.

However, increased job opportunities doesn’t necessarily mean decreased competition: the number of graduates seeking employment in these industries is also expected to grow by more than 3% each year

So how can you get out in front? Staying ahead of your peers isn’t always about skill, it’s often about strategy. With that in mind, here are eight great steps to find a new job in 2024.

1. Research job opportunities

To be successful, you need to find out which companies are hiring, and also the roles they are seeking to fill.

Looking ahead to 2024, what skills will be the most in demand? Researching job opportunities should be your first step and will help ensure you target your search. The Business Because Job Board is full of opportunities with leading companies across all job levels.

2. Update your resume

Taking the information gleaned from the previous step, you then need to update your resume.

While you'll need to ensure that you tailor a new version for each individual job you apply for, having a good base template that outlines your personal details, education history, skills and career highlights will save time.

3. Check your social media

How do you want to present yourself in a professional capacity? If your personal social media accounts are filled with holiday highlight reels and your hot takes on the issues of the moment, now might be the time to clean them up—or make them private.

If your professional profile hasn’t been updated in a few years, update it as necessary, and start sharing progress posts to get more eyes on your profile. Use social media in your favor.

4. Apply for jobs

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealing that jobseekers who apply for 21 to 80 jobs have about a 30% chance of receiving a job offer. The first port of call for anyone searching for a new role in 2024 should therefore be the Business Because Job Board. It’s full of dozens of vacancies with companies across the business and finance sectors.

5. Prepare for interviews

No two interviews will be the same, but having some stock answers and an elevator pitch summarizing your experience and what you can bring to a company will help you to confidently tailor answers to each individual role.

You should also do some relevant industry research to gain an understanding of the projects the company you’re applying to is currently working on, or if they’ve just had some big news you need to know about. This will help you pitch yourself as knowledgeable and interested, it should also help you to position your experience as the solution.

Finally, prepare some questions you’d like to ask at the end of the interview process to show you’re engaged and able to seize the initiative.

6. Attend interviews

On average, 118 candidates apply for one single job, of whom only 20% are invited back for an interview. Successfully secure an offer and you are among just 30% of interviewees who are selected. This means how you perform at an interview matters.

To give yourself the best chance of success, prepare solid examples of times you demonstrated key skills listed in the job description, and ensure you constantly bring the conversation back to the company and what it is looking for.

7.  Negotiate your package

Once you get the job offer it’s important that you respond in a timely and professional manner. This means knowing what your bottom line is in terms of compensation.

Salary is one very important aspect, but are you willing to negotiate on 401k contribution, health care or remote working? Knowing your hard no’s makes this process move in a more timely fashion.

8. Start your 2024 job search

You know what you need to do—but when are you going to start searching?

There’s no time like the present to start job hunting, especially at the tail end of 2023 when hiring managers will have deadlines to meet and budget left to spend.
