If you’re on the way to graduation or have recently completed a degree at business school, you’ll have a keen eye out for where you’d like to take the next step in your career journey.

It’s likely you've got a bucket list of great companies you’d like to work for—those industry-leading names that everyone knows and will look amazing on your resume.

But have you properly considered your potential location?

A recent Oxfam report revealed the best places to work in the US in 2023, Breaking down exactly which states are the best to be an employee—and also the locations where things could be better for workers.

The report analyzed which states have robust laws ensuring adequate wages, safe conditions, and rights for workers to organize.

"States have had to step up for workers and their families in the past few decades, as Congress has stalled on taking action. For example, while the federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25 an hour for 14 years, most states have mandated higher wages,” the report concluded.

Digging into the data, the index is based on state policies in three dimensions: wages (40% of overall score); worker protections (35% of overall score); and rights to organize (25% of overall score).

Here's which states are the best to work in the US, according to Oxfam.

When it comes to the three best locations for career professionals, California, Oregon, and Washington DC come out on top.

It has also been a banner year for the Midwest, according to the report. “Decades of advocacy by workers and organizers paid off this year when Michigan, Minnesota, and Illinois passed new workplace protections for employees and their families,” it read.

That’s all good news for job seekers, but where should you avoid seeking a job? North Carolina comes last in the ratings, preceded by Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.
