BusinessBecause loves this video with the MBAs from the University of St. Gallen class of 2012 talking about their Corporate Ecology and Sustainability elective!

Four months into the full-time St. Gallen MBA, students can choose from over 25 electives grouped into four broad categories: Entrepreneurship and Sustainability, Finance and Banking, Marketing and International Management, and Advanced General Management. They are expected to take eight electives during the entire programme.

The five-day long elective in Corporate Ecology and Sustainabilty is taught by Professor Claude Siegenthaler, who is also a St. Gallen graduate and completed his PhD in Economics with the highest honours in 2005. The popular elective attracts students from a variety of backgrounds.

Canadian Simon Wolpert has over four years of experience as a manager in high-end catering and prior to the MBA worked as an event manager for Presidential Gourment, Canada. Simon took the Corporate Ecology and Sustainability module because he felt it was important to learn how businesses can work alongside environmentalists. “It's important to understand from a business perspective how you can alter strategy to become more environmentally conscious and how you can make money while doing it”, he said.

Swiss national Tessa Steiner is another St. Gallen MBA taking the course. Tessa graduated with BA in International Studies and Psychology from Stonehill College, Massachusetts, USA and worked in sales at private placement life insurers Swiss Life.

Sarah chose the module because she wanted to be prepared for discussions on sustainability in business. She said, “I chose the Corporate Ecology and Sustainability elective because this is a topic that is getting more and more pronounced in today’s markets and because investors are interested in hearing what a company is doing to enhance sustainability”.

Wen Chen, a Chinese student, said he had learned a lot by taking the module. “Normally, people have a very superficial understanding about these topics but with this elective, in five short days, it can totally change your perceptions and understanding”, he said.
In the video below, the St. Gallen MBAs tell us why they opted for the Corporate Ecology and Sustainability module.
