The club connects alumni, students and even candidates for the AGSM MBA.We asked club officers Harsh Mehrotra and Joyce Wang, AGSM MBA Class of 2013, how the India event went down and what they have planned for the rest of the year.
President of the club Harsh, comes from India and has over seven years of experience working in the IT Business Analysis & Presales with tech giants Siemens and Tech Mahindra. He’s been based in India working on projects within India, in Europe, and in South East Asia.
Harsh joined the Business in Asia club because he wanted to help provide a platform to his cohort for understanding the cultural differences that come with doing business in Asia.
Vice president Joyce Wang graduated with a law degree from East China University of Political Science and Law. She began her career in finance working in the legal compliance team of HSBC in Shanghai. She later moved to risk management and, right before the MBA, managed operations risk control at Standard Chartered Bank.
Joyce told us that she wants to strengthen ties between the banking sectors in China and Australia. “The banking industry in Australia is doing really well and I want to use this opportunity to make connections between the two locations”, she said.
This year’s MBA batch at AGSM only took charge of the Business in Asia Club recently and The AGSM Past, Present and Future event held at Hotel Trident, in Gurgaon, India on May 19 was their first big initiative.
Harsh explained that the purpose of the event was to showcase the AGSMbrand in India by bringing AGSM Alumni, current students and prospective students together as a group. The event was part of the 35th year celebrations of AGSM and was also the first time that AGSM have done such an event independently in India.

Over the academic year, the club has plans to organize info sessions where MBAs can learn more about doing Business in Asia. They have already formed an alliance with the Asian Study Institute at the University of New South Wales and are shortlisting industry experts as speakers.
Harsh mentioned that Sydney's geographic location makes it complicated to work around the flight schedules of some speakers from Asia so they may have to use tele/video conferencing at some of these sessions.
The club officers also want to address career questions students may have and so will be organizing an interactive event with Contact Singapore, a government body responsible for foreigners working in Singapore.
The two sessions to be held in July and August will allow MBAs to ask questions about opportunities in Singapore and also to meet with prospective employers.
The Club's India initiative was well received and has opened the gates for more such events in future at other locations. The Club's primary objective will be to enable a platform for high quality discussions around Asian economy and the promises it holds. They've promised to keep BusinessBecause updated of their progress so watch this space!
