The HEC Paris Master in Management (MiM) is an 18-month program with an optional gap year for students to gain professional experience in their target industry.

The program is ranked first in the world by the Financial Times Master in Management ranking 2023, taking the top spot after 12 years as a runner up.

The HEC Paris MiM is customizable, offering 20 specializations, 20 international dual degree options, and a host of elective courses to choose from.

HEC Paris partners with top companies such as Bain & Company, Deloitte, and McKinsey during job fairs on campus. Many of these firms hire MiM grads from the business school.

Tuition fees for the master’s in management program cost $53,200. However, there are various scholarship opportunities available for MiM candidates.

From an overview of the curriculum and handy admissions tips to salary and career prospects—here’s everything you need to know about the HEC Paris MiM.

HEC Paris MiM | Curriculum

In the first year of the HEC Paris MiM, known as the ‘core phase’, students learn the fundamentals of management principles and skills.

Students can also hone their interests towards their target industry by choosing from a pool of electives.

For those aspiring to launch a career in finance, students can take courses in Financial Geography in Central and Western Europe, Inside Venture Capital, and Bayesian Decision Analysis.

Alternatively, if you want to become a social impact leader, you can take courses such as Leading Change: Winning Hearts & Minds, Technologies, Climate Change and Future of Energy, or Ethics and Sustainability.

In the first year of the HEC Paris MiM, students can work on consulting projects and live case studies. Students have previously completed projects with companies such as L’Oréal Paris, PwC, and Roland Berger.

In the optional gap year, students decide whether to put their skills to the test and boost their resume with professional experience or fast-track towards the end of the degree.

For HEC Paris MiM grad Michael Salloum, the choice was clear. He felt that the only way to know that he was making the right moves in his career was to experience the business world first-hand.

Aspiring to launch a career in the media entertainment industry, he went straight to the top and landed internships at TikTok and Disney.

“During my Master in Management courses, I tried to use case studies on these companies as I knew I wanted to work for them. This helped me to build a portfolio of knowledge I could use in my interviews,” he says.

In the final year of the HEC Paris MiM, students can specialize in a wide range of subject areas, including Sustainability and Social Innovation, Entrepreneurship, International Finance, Digital, and Data Science for Business.

There’s also the option to study at one of HEC Paris’ partner schools, such as Tsinghua University, MIT Sloan School of Management, or ESADE Business School, for an international dual management degree.

HEC Paris MiM | How to stand out in your master’s application

If you’re applying to the HEC Paris MiM, you’ll need to showcase how your skills and qualities align with the school’s values.

Sophie Dimich-Louvet, director of recruitment and sales strategy for master’s programs at HEC Paris, says: “Our recruitment criteria are aligned with HEC Paris’ five core values: Excellence, Curiosity, Diversity, Responsibility, and Entrepreneurial Mindset.”

“Besides strong GPA and competitive management test scores, we’re looking for strong, interesting personalities, with a diversity of thought,” she says.

While you don’t need professional work experience to apply for a master in management degree, you should think of relevant anecdotes that emphasize why you’ll be a good addition to the cohort.

"Having a strong balance of hard and soft skills is what makes a candidate stand out. These skills don’t necessarily have to be related to business. We want to know that the student has gained concrete, practical knowledge in any previous experience and knows how to relay this clearly and coherently,” Sophie says.

Your resume and interview are great opportunities to showcase these skills as well as your personality.

“Be yourself and not the one you think we want you to be and be ready to elaborate on your projects or opinions, and to be challenged on these!” she says.

The upcoming deadlines to apply for the next intake of the HEC Paris Master in Management are:

Round 1: October 17th, 2023

Round 2: January 3rd, 2024

The FT reports that 100% of HEC Paris graduates are hired within three months of graduation and receive a 76% salary increase. The average weighted salary (alumni salary three years after graduation) is $129,806.

Many of these jobs were in top industries such as consulting (35%), finance (26%), and technology (13%)—sectors that typically offer generous pay packages and great opportunities for progression.

Cultural experience

I have met the most competent and diverse batch in this school. These people not only thrive on their own but also makes sure that you are doing it with them. The professors will take your had and walk you through all milestones and make sure you are not left behind. I have found their extracurriculars extremely engaging. There was always a room to have social life after academic life. The only hindrance is the location of the school, it is slightly outside city and living in city is expensive.

Internationality and diversity of opportunities

About my programme I would say it is very international and flexible: we have the opportunity to choose exactly the courses we want. But at the same time, the frame of the campus is crucial in students' life and enable us to create friendships.

Great selection of people

While HEC's MBA is highly selective, I really enjoy the type of people HEC's selects to make sure everybody gets the best out of their MBA experience and networking opportunities. Not only it's an incredibly diverse pool of people (~60 nationalities) but most importantly they make sure to let in friendly empathic and curious people.

Best in France for Grande ecole

A prestigious business school. Languages are important. It is better to have a scientific baccalaureate with excellent grades in high school and good assessments. The courses are well designed as per the latest trends and practicality of learning in stressed upon. Overall, a very good experience.

Diversity and quality of fellow students

Very international and interesting place to be and opens a lot of opportunities, however the administration is very french and facilities are subpar (gym, classrooms) meaning the academic affairs is pretty much useless and lastly we are graded on a curve which can create a toxic environment because of the competition. With that being said the pros outweighs the cons by far.

The quality of the teachers, the campus, the clubs

The school is very international indeed, we have courses with international students and share things with them within the extra academic life (in the social clubs especially). We have great career prospects if we prepare ourselves well - however, the global curriculum is still very finance-oriented, which is a pity for other interesting domains of the company world, which does not rely on finance only. The social clubs are good practice for the management and for now, are quite independent.

HEC Paris awaits you

HEC Paris is really a nice place to do a master's in business. Many classes are useful and interesting (corporate finance, financial accounting, contract law…), some are less - but the curriculum is to be reviewed in the year to come. Regarding the student life, it is incredible, with about 130 clubs, lots of great parties with even greater people. The Jouy campus offers a lot of opportunities to do sports, and you can breathe fresh air every day. HEC also helps a great deal to find an internship or a job.

Enrolling in the HEC MBA was by far the best decision I made for myself. The people and faculty are great, with lots of opportunities to meet people and expand your horizons. Very nice campus where I have had some good running sessions. The alumni network is superb and very helpful. It also has a good support system for entrepreneurs. Would definitely recommend it!
