Deakin's GIFT City Campus in India provides local students with the opportunity to enroll in Deakin's cutting-edge postgraduate programs in business analytics and cybersecurity. Notably, these programs are offered at half the cost of Australian international fees, making quality education more accessible to students in the region.
“Australia setting up India’s first ever foreign university campus is a landmark moment in Australia-India relations. This opens a new chapter in our education ties, and this is only the beginning,” said His Excellency Philip Green OAM, Australian High Commissioner to India, during his address at the inauguration event.
Iain Martin is the vice-chancellor professor appointed to Deakin University.
"Opening the world's first international branch campus in India reflects our commitment to offering global education that empowers students to excel in the digital age. This is an investment in the future leaders who will uphold and strengthen the bond between our nations," he said.
"Steadfast in our promise to give back to the community and change lives, Deakin University will grant two fully funded scholarships to economically challenged students," he added.
Commenting on this significant milestone in Indo-Australian educational relations, Ravneet Pawha, vice-president (Global Alliances) and CEO (South Asia), added that Indian students and professionals should seize this opportunity to emerge as global pioneers in a technology-driven economy.
"Our bold vision is for GIFT City to be a regional hub in the future, attracting students from across the globe to India, and offering Australian students a unique opportunity to spend a trimester at Gujarat,” she said.
In January 2023, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Deakin University, Australia founded a research academy in India to conduct collaborative global research projects, joint supervision, and meritorious scholarships.
IIT Madras Deakin University Research Academy is also launching a comprehensive four-year joint PhD program, offering valuable international doctoral training opportunities for early-stage researchers.
The initiative includes the allocation of 30 scholarships in 2024, catering to scholars from both IIT Madras and Deakin University, as outlined in a release by IIT Madras. The program will facilitate participation in an open innovation ecosystem and research network, providing scholars with the chance to collaborate with esteemed industry partners in both India and Australia.

Collaborating with industry leaders such as Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL, Xebia, NSE Academy, and IIBX, the GIFT City Campus integrates Australian education with the Indian industry, providing students with real-world exposure.
Academic teams comprise a blend of local and international expertise, maintaining high standards with stringent selection criteria. In the recruitment process, 80% of the facilities will be staffed by Indians, with the remaining 20% from abroad. Guest lectures by industry leaders enrich the learning experience.
The university also boasts state-of-the-art, digitally enabled classrooms, libraries, and learning spaces, committed to carbon neutrality, and seamlessly integrated with Deakin's campuses in Australia.
Program details and fees
Deakin University's GIFT City Campus in India offers two in-demand, industry-relevant postgraduate courses: Business Analytics and Cyber Security. Both programs are recognized by the Australian Computer Society.
The two-year course, which can be fast-tracked to 18 months, is priced at around INR 21 lakh. The program will feature a blend of local and international faculty, supplemented by guest lectures from prominent industry figures.
Applications for the Deakin GIFT City Campus are open until March 31, 2024, with classes slated to begin in July 2024.
The selection criteria include the undergraduate (UG) percentage and CAT requirements, with subsequent evaluation through a personal interview. In the initial round of screening, the acceptance rate stands at 10%.
