After losing its long-held title of ‘best Master in Management (MiM) degree’ in 2023, the University of St Gallen has reclaimed its crown in this year’s Financial Times MiM Ranking

The Swiss-based school dominated the ranking for 12 years until the perennial runner up, HEC Paris, managed to vault its position in 2023. St Gallen reclaims first place in 2024 due to strong performances in a variety of areas.

In key metrics related to salary performance and career progression, St Gallen excelled against other European rival schools. It ranked among the top five schools for the average salaries earned three years after graduation, while 98% of students found jobs within three months of graduating and a further 93% said studying the school’s flagship Master in Strategy and International Management helped achieve their aims. St Gallen’s career service also ranked top among all listed schools.

The school was helped by strong showings in metrics related to diversity, such as the percentage of international students among the cohort (88%) and the proportion of women among students (47%).

The Financial Times also places significant weight upon how schools prepare students to perform on a global stage. International course experience ranks schools according to whether students complete exchanges and internships in other countries while studying. International work mobility ranks schools by their success in placing students in jobs in new locations. In these categories St Gallen placed 13th and third, respectively.

INSEAD MiM ranks well in first eligible year

One newcomer in the Financial Times MiM list for 2024 is INSEAD. A world-renowned business school that has topped multiple FT rankings across different program types, 2024 is the first year that INSEAD has been eligible to participate in the ranking since it established its MiM degree in 2020.

The school ranks third overall, taking the place of the UK’s London Business School which falls to sixth and beating out competition from other well-renowned business schools in France.

INSEAD is buoyed by strong showings in the international work mobility category and its high proportion of international students and faculty.

European business schools continue to dominate FT MiM Ranking

St Gallen, HEC Paris and now INSEAD are institutions that make up the overwhelmingly large contingent of European business schools which dominates the FT MiM Ranking each year.

In 2024, the top 20 comprises 18 such schools, with six based in France making it the most well-represented country. Switzerland, the UK, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, The Czech Republic, Spain, and Austria are also represented. China is the only non-European country to feature within the top 20.

Across the 100 schools represented in this years’ ranking, there are 24 French schools in total. Five of these rank within the top 10, with HEC Paris and INSEAD followed by the likes of EDHEC Business School (4th), ESCP Business School (6th), and EMLyon Business School (8th).

The UK is also well-represented, with 10 schools overall led by LBS (sixth), Imperial College Business School (24th), and Warwick Business School (33rd). Germany has seven schools among the top 100, while Spain has five and Switzerland and Portugal each have four.

Business schools in Asia comprise a significant portion of the ranking. Indian business schools take up 14 spots in the 2024 list, three more than in the previous year. They are led by SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (35th) and Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (39th).

Alongside two entries from mainland China, there are also business schools from Taiwan and Singapore among the list.

While each year the number of Master in Management degrees available in the US increases, including at top institutions such as the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and Carnegie Mellon’s Tepper School of Business, there are just two US institutions in the 2024 list. They are Hult International Business School (44th) and University of South Carolina Moore School of Business (79th).

In the US, the MBA degree has always been the favored generalist degree type among business schools.
