We are in the so-called “fourth industrial revolution”, in which a slew of technologies from intelligent robotics to the internet of things are driving sweeping change across industries.

The implementation of intelligent robots into modern production facilities means there’s growing demand for experts who know how to design, control and maintain these systems.

RWTH Aachen is the latest university to recognize this critical fact. Its new Cyber-Physical Systems and Intelligent Robotics (CPS-IR) course, will help professionals bridge the knowledge gap in this fast-evolving field.

The professional education certificate will focus on the integration of digitized systems into individual companies.

Besides fluency in English, participants need good skills in at least one modern and object-oriented programming language (Java / C# / C++).

The course is mainly taught by researchers and graduates, rather than by professors. This will allow participants to profit from a wide range of practical experiences, enriching the theoretical part of the course.

“This is exactly what our lecturers have to offer: They are involved in practical engineering projects and are therefore familiar with both theory and practice,” says Prof. Dr-Ing. Tobias Meisen, Head of the Institute of Information Management in Mechanical Engineering (IMA) of RWTH Aachen University.

A flexible structure will allow participants to choose suitable modules and time frames, according to their own skills and needs.

The foundation module, aims to provide an overview of the basic communication technologies in modern production facilities, such as OPC UA, DDS and RabbitMQ. This module lasts five days, has a workload of 50 hours, and leaves successful participants with two ECTS and the official RWTH Executive Certificate. The short intensive certificate course takes place from 24 - 28 April 2017. It costs €3,600.

Participants can also decide to continue studying and attend at least three additional, advanced level modules. These will provide them with a set of tools to design and implement problem-specific solutions for challenging robotic tasks. These modules are also five days long, with a workload of 150 hours. Successful participants leave with 8 ECTS and the official RWTH Academic Certificate. The advanced certificate course, which combines four short courses, costs €10,800.

A third option is to go on even further with so-called “expert training”. Participants who complete three of the advanced modules, can then conduct a field project and a case study. Again, each one lasts five days, and has a workload of 375 hours. Graduates get 15 ECTS and the official RWTH Expert Certificate. The expert training costs €18,000.

“We have designed this course to fit participants’ busy work schedules. Each module is offered continuously each year. Participants can individually extend their training if this fits their schedule better,” says Dr-Ing. Sebastian Reuter, Research Group Leader at the Cybernetics Lab.

He adds: “The courses are directly applicable to the challenges of companies, enabling participants to develop and employ their own strategies.”
