If you graduate from business school in 2025, you'll enter a modern workplace that has evolved beyond the traditional 9-to-5 routine. B-school graduates are stepping into a more flexible world with a need to navigate the increasing need for digital fluency and the constant undercurrent of global change.
At CEMS, a global alliance of 33 world-leading business schools, we've just published our latest report–The Future-Forward Workforce–in which we explored what this transformed career landscape means for fresh graduates. From workplace expectations, to the employer choices and the skills recent grads believe will fuel their success, these findings show what future business school students can expect from the modern workforce.
What do young professionals want?
Our report shows that for young professionals, digital proficiency isn’t just an asset; it’s the foundation of job security. Graduates describe a reimagined workplace where enjoyment and creativity flourish, with the office serving as a collaborative hub rather than a rigid workspace.
Flexibility is paramount. Today’s young professionals want roles that match their life aspirations—including a rising desire for work-related travel. However, despite the rise in remote work, the office remains an indispensable space.
It's where bonds are forged, ideas flourish, and cultures thrive. For these graduates, the office isn't obsolete; it's a cornerstone of community building and professional growth.
Embracing the new workforce
In the report, to add a seasoned perspective to that of the b-school grads, senior leaders from our global CEMS corporate and academic partners shared insights and advice to guide the next generation of trailblazers.
Far from having a doomsday outlook, our corporate partners see early career professionals as catalysts for innovation. Companies are responding by fostering empowered, dynamic teams with the understanding that every team member is a potential brand ambassador.
However, employers stress the value of face-to-face interactions in addition to allowing for flexible working. Like recent graduates, employers see the office as a vital space for building connections, fostering mentorship, and unlocking growth opportunities. On-the-job learning is still crucial for young professionals.
As Francesca Morichini, chief HR officer at Amplifon, stresses in the report:
“We recognize that young people can’t be expected to understand the complexities of an organization or how best to make an impact straight from the classroom. We’re working to harness the power of this new workforce by giving them the opportunity to build new capabilities and competencies that help them navigate and interact in a positive way with the rest of the organization.”
Ten recommendations for business graduates to succeed at work
CEMS corporate and academic partners share ten tips to help b-school grads to succeed in the modern workplace:
1. Stay curious and keep learning day-by-day: Cultivate a growth mindset that embraces continual learning. Recognize that knowledge is ever-evolving and staying curious opens doors to new opportunities.
2. Connect with others and network authentically: Build genuine relationships with peers, mentors, and industry professionals. Authentic networking goes beyond superficial interactions; it's about fostering meaningful connections based on mutual respect and shared interests.
3. Be adaptable and embrace change: Understand that the career landscape is constantly evolving. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a barrier to success. Flexibility and adaptability are essential traits for navigating the uncertainties of the future.
4. Embrace and learn from failure: Failure is not the end but a stepping-stone to success. Embrace setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth. Each experience, whether positive or negative, provides valuable insights and lessons for personal and professional development.
5. Diversify your experiences: While at business school, explore beyond the confines of academia by engaging in extracurricular activities such as volunteering, internships, or sports. These experiences help shape your identity, develop your skills, and broaden your perspective on the world.
6. Seek opportunities for growth in employment: Choose roles that offer opportunities for learning and development. A sustainable career journey requires continuous growth and adaptation to new challenges and opportunities.
7. Harness the power of emotions and intuition: Learn to connect with and trust your emotions and intuition. Emotions can provide valuable insights into decision-making, and intuition often guides us toward the right path.
8. Prepare for and embrace change: Recognize that change is inevitable in today's fast-paced world. Be proactive in preparing for change and embrace it as an opportunity for innovation and growth. Agility and resilience are essential skills for navigating the uncertainties of the future.
9. Be prepared to lead: Leadership skills are increasingly valuable across roles. Develop your leadership abilities and be prepared to take on leadership responsibilities within your organization.
10. Learn from the world around you: While classroom learning is important, real-world experiences offer invaluable lessons. Take every opportunity to explore the world around you, whether through travel, volunteering, or engaging with diverse communities. The insights these experiences provide often surpass what can be learned in a classroom setting.
