The Office of Research and Innovation at Edith Cowan is now accepting submissions for the ECU Innovators Awards. The competition is open to all ECU staff and students, and is focused on identifying innovative products or services with commercial potential.
There is a single cash prize of $20,000 for the winner!
Applications are assessed by a panel of judges with extensive industry experience on the basis of novelty, market potential, market characteristics, feasibility, competitive advantage, and stage of development.
Just to let you know the level of innovation that’s expected we checked out last year’s winning product by School of Education Post Doctoral Research Fellow Dr Alistair Campbell.
Dr. Campbell entered his iAssess, a smartphone app that reduces the administrative burden of assessing student work.
The iAssess combines the best features of a word processor, spreadsheet and database, enabling users to easily assess a student’s work. It eliminates all the busy admin work like adding up student’s scores, writing their names, and the iPad version will also allow you to email the students their work.
The product has been used by about ten ECU classes, including music and drama for both live performance and more traditional assessment items. Dr Campbell said there were plans to explore its use in primary schools.
The awards are open to staff and students, both full time and part time, employed or enrolled at the University on 1 September 2012.
One caveat is that the the subject of any application must have achieved ‘proof of concept’ i.e. proof that the concept is technically possible, ideally with a working prototype. Sorry, no half-baked goods allowed!
Entries close on Friday, 28 September 2012. Further details and applications forms can be found here.
