After graduating from the University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht with a major in journalism, she went to work abroad in Sydney, Australia as a journalist. After a year of that she became an English teacher and child worker in Sevilla in Spain for 5 months.
With a radiant love for travelling, Hovinga also spent some time in 2007 and 2009 in South Africa and South East Asia, respectively. “All the work I’ve done in different parts of the world has definitely released my interests in travelling and international thinking.”
Now, at the age of just 21, she is ready to embark on a new adventure at Nyenrode University. The 16-month full-time Masters in Management program seems perfect for the entrepreneurial-minded Hovinga. “I was looking for another challenge and I’ve always been interested in management”. The program offers budding entrepreneurs hands-on learning.
When asked why she chose Nyenrode, Hovinga confidently replied, “I wanted to stay in the Netherlands because I hadn’t seen my friends and family in a while. We’ve got a few universities but Nyenrode was where I wanted to go. I was drawn to the massive international network and the personal attention you get. Nyenrode will help me cross the bridge between theory and practice. I knew the university offered great theoretical lectures but also tons of practical methods of teaching like business games and cases.”
She also says, “I’ve always wanted to start my own company and an MSc will definitely help”. What kind of company Hovinga wants to start is still up in the air, “I want to start something and make it a success,” she says. The “passion of the process” is what she’s after.
Her driven mindset may well have been the extra ingredient needed for Hovinga to win a €10,000 scholarship from Nyenrode University. “The scholarship is for new MSc students. You have to make a two-minute movie showing what a leader of the future should look, and how an education from Nyenrode could help the process. I filmed my video in the various places that I had travelled to and ended up winning!”
Hovinga is set to begin her degree this August. “I’m really excited to live with my fellow classmates and experience everything together. I’m really excited to learn as much as possible, work hard and develop as a person!”
